My take on VGC 2016's strong weather and countering it

Hello! My name is Sam Chao and I go by BattleArena in the VGC community. I run a youtube channel in hopes of entertaining and giving more exposure to the official competitive Pokemon scene. I'd like it if you take the time to check my channel out as I put in a lot of work and passion into what I do!

Moving on to the main topic, VGC 2016. Many rumors were spoken of when VGC 2015 came to an end. Among the most popular ones were: Are they banning the top 12 most used Pokemon from VGC 2015's Battlespot? Are they removing mega stones to change up the VGC scene? Will it resemble the Generation showdown from battlespot allowing 2 restricted legendaries to be on your team? And well, surprise surprise, my good friend LegacyVGC predicted the latter.

As you know, VGC 2015 was known for CHALK, cresselia_xy_iconheatran_xy_iconamoonguss_xy_iconlandorus-therian_xy_iconkangaskhan_xy_mega_icon
one of the most consistent cores of VGC history. However with the addition of restricted Pokemon, we will definitely be seeing less of these though they wont be gone completely. Continue expecting to see them in many teams.

Welcome to the weather wars! Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon will over-centralize the meta-game and anyone who doesn't have 1 or both of these on their team will be at a disadvantage. The ability to render fire and water type attacks useless without any effort opens up for some great strategies. Below are some pairing options that out of plain sight seem strong:

PS:Please note Kangaskhan can be easily paired with both primals.

Many will begin to wonder, what can be a sure counter to primal reversions? I have a couple in mind which are listed below:

  1. Grass Knot & Low Kick
  2. Field control and Switch Prevention
  3. Air Lock & Cloud Nine
  4. Ability Control

Grass Knot

Grass Knot and low kick are weight based moves and with restricted Pokemon being on the heavier side these moves get to shine. Grass Knot hitting primal kyogre for super effective damage and Groudon for neutral damage on its weaker special defense make this a great move. Pair it with one of the harder hitting Pokemon on the special side such as Xerneas plus choice specs or life orb and all of a sudden these Pokemon are potentially threatened to a potential OHKO. A few Pokemon that I think are great at using grass knot are listed below.

On a side note, Eelektross, the lati twins and their respective megas are great due to their typing and ability making them great against Primal Groudon. Raichu was chosen for its lightning rod ability paired with faster primal kyogre can net a KO on slower groudon before it gets to move, not to mention fake out. It's worth noting that Venusaur is probably the best grass knot user in the game due to its typing & ability, since venusaur alone threatens Xerneas, Kyogre and groudon for over 50% damage with a life orb or choice specs. Mega sceptile is interesting when paired with Primal kyogre and quick guard allows for water spouts while maintaining Primal Kyogre safe from Threats.

Field control and Switch Prevention

Field control and switch prevention, known in the form of shadow tag and mean look. Popular shadow taggers are:

The ability to trap a primal kyogre/groudon and switch in your own primal can swing momentum heavily in your favor, though switches are still highly punishable and easy to predict.

Air lock & Cloud Nine

Air lock and Cloud Nine are interesting choices since they ignore the strong weather allowing you to use water moves in strong sunlight, and fire moves in strong rain. Viable Pokemon with weather negating abilities are listed below:

I actually really like the leads of ludicolo paired with mega rayquaza due to the ability to OHKO both primals not to mention the fake out support to help rayquaza setup. To be honest rayquaza could even be used without the mega evolution and to similar success.

Ability Control

Ability control comes in many forms. Worry seed, role play, skill swap, entrainment, simple beam, gastro acid & mummy. One that really stands out to me and have experienced defeat to it, is prankster in conjunction with role play, since it actually resets your weather in case its over powered by the opposing primal Pokemon. This does mean a move has to be given up at the time but usually thundurus incarnate works well when paired with kyogre due to synergy. Below are some prankster role play Pokemon:

I hope this helps the community realize how vast the options are and that this indeed will be a very fun year for #PlayPokemon! I will try to analyze in depth the restricted pokemon and what potential they have.
